Pots, Spaces and Pockets
How keel handles challenger-bank sub-account transfers so they never clutter your reports.
Monzo Pots, Starling Spaces and Revolut Pockets are sub-accounts inside one bank account. Moving money to and from them isn't real spending or income — it's money changing location within the same account, often dozens of times a month.
keel strips these transfers during import, before they ever reach your transactions. Your reports stay honest and uncluttered, with nothing for you to review.
How it works
Stripped at import, never stored
When keel detects a pot transfer in your statement, it removes the row before importing. Unlike regular internal transfers — which are stored in your transaction list but excluded from reports — pot transfers don't exist in keel's data at all. They never appear in your transaction list, your review queue, or your reports.
The summary card
After an import, a summary card shows how many pot transfers were found and which pots they involved — for example, transfers to your "Holiday" and "Bills" pots. This is informational only; there's nothing to confirm or action. It exists so you can see the numbers reconcile against your bank statement.
Which banks are supported
Monzo pot transfers are detected today. Monzo's CSV export labels them explicitly, which makes detection completely reliable.
Starling Spaces and Revolut Pockets will follow once we can verify their export formats against real data. Until then, transfers to Spaces or Pockets may appear as ordinary transfers in your review queue — confirm them as internal transfers and they'll be excluded from your reports the standard way.
Monzo's "Combine Pots" export option
If you export from Monzo with "Combine Pots" switched on, pot transfer rows are already absent from the file. keel handles that fine — there's simply nothing to strip, and every remaining transaction is real.
Why it works this way
Pot movements carry no financial meaning for your household: no money entered or left your account. Storing hundreds of them per month would bloat your transaction history and give you noise to scroll past, with no honest way to ever count them. Removing them entirely is the truthful treatment.
Good to know
- Stripping happens per import — if you've already imported statements with pot transfers in them before this feature existed, those rows remain as stored transfers.
- Pot names found during import are remembered against the account, so the summary card can name them.
FAQ
Will I see pot transfers in my transaction list? No. They're removed before import. The post-import summary card is the only place they're mentioned.
Does money I move into a Pot count as saving? Not automatically. A Pot lives inside your current account, so keel can't reliably tell a savings pot from a spending pot. Transfers to a separate savings account count toward your savings rate — see Transfers between accounts.
I use Starling — what should I do in the meantime? Transfers to Spaces will show up as candidates in your Transfers review queue. Confirm them as internal transfers; they'll be excluded from reports just the same, they're just stored rather than stripped.
