Your data and privacy

What keel collects, who processes it, how long it's kept, and your rights.

keel handles real financial data, so we try to be straight with you about what we hold and what we do with it. The full privacy notice lives at /privacy — this is the short version.

What we collect and why

We collect what we need to run the service: who you are (name and email), the transactions and accounts you import, the budgets, goals and notes you set, and what we derive from all that — your health score, spending categories and coaching. We also collect basic, privacy-respecting usage data to understand which features work, with no financial detail attached.

Who processes your data

A small set of trusted providers handle the data on our behalf — a database host, the app host, the sign-in provider, the AI that categorises your transactions and powers the coach, an analytics tool, and a session store. The AI provider is the only one that sees the financial detail, and only to do the categorising and coaching. Our analytics never receives your financial detail.

How long we keep it

We keep your data while your household is active. Some things are cleared sooner — an uploaded credit report and its contents are removed six months after the report date, for example. If you delete your account we erase your data, and dormant accounts are removed after a period of inactivity.

Sensitive spending

Some places you spend — a pharmacy, a clinic — can imply sensitive things about you. keel never builds coaching around sensitive merchants, and we don't infer anything from them as a feature. We can't strip every sensitive merchant out of a bank feed you import, so we keep what we store to a minimum and hold our AI provider to no-retention, no-training terms.

Your rights

You can ask to see your data, correct it, get a copy of it, or delete it — deleting your account is in Settings → Household. If you're ever unhappy with how we handle your data, talk to us first, and you can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

FAQ

Where's the full privacy policy and terms? The privacy notice is at /privacy and the terms of service at /terms — both linked at the bottom of this help centre and on the sign-in and sign-up pages.

What do I agree to when I sign up? When you create an account, keel asks you to accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy and keeps a private, dated record that you did. If you had an account before this was added, you're asked to accept once next time you sign in. Marketing email is a separate, opt-in choice — keel won't email you marketing unless you ask it to.

Does my bank data get sent to an AI? Yes — to categorise your spending and run the coach, under no-retention, no-training terms. Our analytics tools never see your financial detail.

Can keel see sensitive spending like a pharmacy visit? It can see the transaction, but it never builds insights around sensitive merchants.
