Transactions & categories
Editing a transaction
The transaction detail page — changing categories, income types, transfers and refunds.
Tapping any transaction opens its detail page. It shows everything keel knows about the transaction — merchant, date, amount, account, category and notes — and lets you change anything that needs correcting.
Changes save automatically as you make them. There's no Save button to remember; "Done" simply takes you back to where you were.
How it works
What you'll see
- The merchant name, cleaned up from the raw bank description
- Date and amount (income shown in teal)
- The account it came from, and the bank's transaction code if there is one (DD, FPI and so on)
- The current category, with keel's suggestion state if it hasn't been confirmed yet
- A notes field you can edit freely
Editing depends on the transaction type
Expenses get the standard category picker with search. After you change a category, keel offers to apply the same change to all of that merchant's other transactions — one tap fixes the lot.
Income shows income type pills (Salary, Rental, Business pre/post-tax, Other), plus two escape routes: "Not income? Change category" and "This is a refund", which opens the refund matching flow — see Refunds and returns.
Transfers show transfer type pills (Credit card payment, Internal transfer, Savings), plus "Not a transfer? Change category" if keel got it wrong. See Transfers between accounts.
Refunds
If a transaction is marked as a refund, you'll see a refund badge and a tappable link to the original purchase it offsets. "Remove refund classification" undoes it.
The suggestion card
When keel has categorised the transaction but you haven't confirmed it, a card at the top explains the state:
- Needs your input but keel has a guess: "This looks like [category]. Confirm to save."
- Categorised automatically: "keel categorised this as [category]. Does that look right?"
- Once you've confirmed or corrected it, the card disappears.
Undoing a classification
You can send a transaction back to the review queue at any time: "Remove category" clears it for an expense, and there are matching options to remove an income or transfer classification.
Good to know
- A business expense toggle is available on the detail page for marking individual transactions — useful for sole traders. See Business accounts.
- You can flag a transaction as a one-off expense. It still appears normally everywhere, but keel excludes it from spending-trend calculations so a single big purchase doesn't skew your trajectory.
FAQ
Do I need to save my changes? No. Category changes and edits save automatically the moment you make them.
I changed a category — will keel remember for next time? Yes. Corrections teach keel the merchant's category for future imports, and you'll be offered a bulk fix for existing transactions too. See How keel learns your merchants.
